I wanted to talk a bit more about Wheat this week. I talked a little about it HERE. I talked about the different types of Wheat and what types are better for what. I also talked a bit about grinding it. I tried out my vita mix with the dry attachment to grind our wheat and it worked great! I them made bread with it and it was the best tasting bread I have ever had. So now my goal is to keep making the bread with the fresh ground wheat. When you do it this way you have to store the flour in the fridge so the nutrients stay in the flour and you have the healthiest bread possible.
I have never found whole wheat in a store here. I have been looking for it to price it and see if it is cheaper then buying it online. If anyone knows where they sell it please let me know.
The place I get it from is actually ordered through my church. But I have known others who have ordered it is bags from places like Winco. They just ask if it can be ordered and some places will do it for you. Others have found it at bulk stores that are local. I have heard of amish food stores having it for cheap. When you buy it at places like that it is usually a big bag like you find the flour or sugar in at Costco.
This Site has the #10 cans to buy for $9.99. they also have 50 lb bag for about $46. This will make a lot of flour and it will help your budget a lot because it is so cheap. To buy things like this it will take your whole food budget, or you can save $10 a week from your budget until you have enough left over to get it. I recommend the second one, but if there is a week you really don’t need it, it is a great investment to make.
I found This and This and This on Amazon as well. I think it is the whole wheat grain, that is important as well for the nutrients. But you could use your gift cards from Swagbucks on there and get it free! This is something that will last you a while and help your family be healthier. That is what we are trying to do around here. I am gradually introducing more grain meals and items into my families diet. And in this process we are also trying to rid ourselves of the sugary things that have slowly come back into our home as we got them for free. I really want to go back to healthier foods and not much sugar. Having sugar a treat instead of something we need.
Anyone want to join me in the Using more Grains challenge?? I will be looking for recipes that are healthier and trying to post some on here. I will also be working on adding more beans and less meat. Anyone that wants to join me is more then welcome.
