Food Storage Friday!!!!!

Fats and Oils have always been something I have always stayed away from. But I am finding myself using oil more and more and more. When you cook from scratch you do use them. I am just trying to stick to healthy oils. But to do this I need to know more about them. So this week I am focusing on knowing about different oils, how they can be replaced and how well they store.

Oil has to be rotated within a year, so this is something that is good to have, but only store as much as you will use in a year. They must be stored on a cool, dry place and be of high quality for them to last the longest. They easily go rancid in heat. Shortening stores a bit longer, but is not very healthy for you. There are somethings that you will want it for though so it is important to know about it. The Crisco company says that if unopened it can be stored indefinitely. but once opened it has to be used within 2 years.

Vegetable oil is mainly used for making bread. So to know how much would be a years worth you have to figure out how much bread you would be making for your family in an emergency. it is is 1 loaf a day you will multiply the amount of oil for 1 loaf x 365. then you may want just a bit extra. Olive oil can store a little longer, the more “virgin” the olive oil the darker and stronger it is. “Light” oils are lighter and have a less strong taste. The light oil is a great option for baking and cooking, and the virgin oils for dressings and other things like that. Shortening is used for baking and cooking. This is good especially for sweeter things. Mayonnaise should alway be bought in small jars and only how much you will use in a few months because it doesn’t store well and wont be reliable in an emergency.

Oil can replace butter in any recipe (usually canola oil). It is much more healthy for you and it makes things softer. This is a great way to cut calories and then you don’t have to worry about storing so many different things for your storage. The more simple you can be the better. All other oils and be interchangeable.

How are you doing with your food storage? do you have any tips to add? Post a comment, I would love to hear form you!
