Food Storage Friday!!!!!

by Melissa on May 1, 2009

Sorry this is so ate I had a great day spending it with DH and doing our big WINCO stock up.  We got 25 boxes of cereal!!!!  They only cost us about $13 too!!!  So I have dubbed this the food storage item of the week.  CEREAL!!!!!!!

I wrote a post this afternoon about the cereal deals all over the town and the CVS one will start on Sunday.  However the Target one will end tomorrow so be sure if you are planning on doing it that you do it now!!!

So most of you would think that cereal is not a food storage item and before a couple of months ago I would have agreed with you.  I never thought regular food like that would be something that I would store and use and restore and so on.  I thought food storage was something like wheat or dried milk or something  that you store in a can under your bed.

While those things are food storage.  They aren’t all that food storage is about.  Food storage is about getting all the items your family would normally eat.  My family eats cereal 1 or 2 days a week.  The other days I cook oatmeal or cinnamon rolls or things like that.  But my family eats cereal so this is a perfect thing to have a big storage of when it goes on sale.

It is important when you are starting your food storage to keep in mind that food storage is a storage but more importantly it is something you regularly use so you keep it rotated.  To use it, it needs to be things your family likes and that you would use.  Wheat is great to have as it lasts forever, but I wouldn’t just eat wheat all day unless I was starving.  I would want different flavors and things that I am used to eating.  So as you plan your storage be sure you are getting the things you use everyday and not just the big storage type items you normally would think of when you think of food storage.

It is also important in food storage that you learn how to cook things you may normally buy at the store.  Things like bread and other things that are relatively easy to cook, but that are just time consuming to do.  I recently started to learn to cook from scratch.  I have always coked dinner, but now I am making bread and breakfast ( waffles pancakes, cinnamon rolls and things like that) from scratch.  It has forced me to expand my knowledge and it is helping me to be able to live simpler because I don’t have a bunch of different mixes for everything.

Your challenge this week is to take 1 day and make a meal from something in your storage.  If you need some Ideas with videos of the items as she is making them go to Everyday Food Storage  She has so many things that she cooks from scratch.  She makes it look so easy too.  Another website I have found to be a great resource is Super Cook This website has a great resource when you have a bunch of ingredients and have no idea what to make.  you can put in the ingredients you have and it will give you a list of recipes that have those items in them.  It also will tell you what ingredients you need to make that item so if you are missing an item or 2 you can go just get those items.

When you decide what are doing let me know! Write about it on your blog and post it here when you finish it too!!!
