Last time I talked about Having 1 car. If you haven’t read the first parts of our story, you can read then by following these links.

Part 3

After months of the diapers I realized I needed to cut even more.  By this time my husband had gotten a raise at work and we were making more money.  We lived pay check to pay check.  We always would pay tithes to church and pray that we would be able to make it.  Some how it worked.  I was getting so tired of never having money and always feeling like we were struggling.  A friend of mine wrote on her Facebook status that she loved paying bills.  I commented to her that I thought she was crazy but was impressed with her excitement.  She then wrote me a message all about her experience finding out about Dave Ramsey and his Financial Peace University program.

I began to look into Dave Ramsey and my friend was wonderful enough to send us his book “Total Money Makeover“.  Since we had no debt up until that point it became a guide for us to make more of our money.  We realized if we were going to make this work we needed to find more month to our money.

I started looking up ways to shrink our monthly bills.  I found a site that mentioned couponing!  I looked at it and looked at it trying to make sense of what I was reading.  After looking at it and scratching my head I closed the internet and walked away.  I thought it sounded good, but it just didn’t work for me.  Over the next few weeks I keep getting brave and going back to the site I had looked at and tried and tried again to understand.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and try it.

I went to Walgreens and spent less then I would of, but did so much wrong and they were out of so much that I ended up with a 30% savings.  I walked out of the store and laughed at myself for thinking I could do this.  I put everything away and didn’t look back for 4 weeks.  After those 4 weeks I talked with a friend who coupons and I realized I needed to let myself learn.  So I went back and let myself learn and have ended up saving thousands in the last year of coupononing.  I even saved enough for us to pay cash for a new van and take a trip.  Couponing and Dave Ramsey has been a huge life changing thing for us and I will never look back!

Love this post and love Dave. We are also debt free but are stuck on step 4. Cannot quite get to funding for college because of income. Thanks for the encouragement.
