Kids Bedroom Makeover: Making Room for 4

Kids Room Makeover

With Number 4 due in 2 short months we have started to do a little makeover of the kids room so everyone will fit.  As some of you may remember a year ago we moved into a 950 sq. foot house with at that time our family of 5.  We will now have 6 and will not be moving into a bigger place.  So we are making it work and we are simplifying even more to make it happen.

I have a friend who lived in a studio apt. with his family when he was little.  They had 6 people in the studio, so I am trying to keep in mind that we can make it work if we need to.  I wanted to show you a before video of the room.

No, I don’t want to show you.  I really don’t.  It is too embarrassing!  This is the way we have lived for the last few months because I wasn’t very organized and I was just lost until I had a friend show me one thing I could do.

Then one thing led to the next and we now have a plan to fix the room so it will easily be used by all 4 kids.  Now I look at it and think that you could probably fit 5 in their easily if needed…. but we wont be doing that anytime soon that I am aware of. 😉

So despite my embarrassment… here is the before of the room.

Excuse the bad phone video.  I am still learning how to take videos on my phone.

Please tell me your kids rooms look like this sometimes!  No seriously tell me so I don’t feel so bad!

We are a family of five living in a 960sq ft house. This includes myself, my husband, our 8 year old daughter, our 6 year old son and my 28 year old daughter. All of us in a house with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. In order to give my daughter privacy, she was given 1/2 of the 12ft x 24ft living room. The younger kids are getting older and, because they are not both girls/boys, they need their own space. One will stay in the bedroom and the other is going to get the other 1/2 of the living room. Unconventional, I know, but it will work for us. It is our mission to organize our kids’ things so I hope to get some pointers from your project. I look forward to seeing the ‘after’ product.

    1. Thanks for your comment Anne! We considered when we first moved in selling our couch and getting a hide a bed so my husband and I could sleep there and then we would have the 2 rooms with the kids in it. I still think it would be a good idea if they were a little older. Our oldest is currently 6 so we are lucky not to have privacy issues quite yet, but it wont be long until we do. When the baby is here, we will have 2 boys and 2 girls so if we stay here after law school we will probably have to do the bed in the living room for us with our clothes in one of the bedrooms and split up the kids so they have more privacy. Good to know there are others making their small spaces work for them!

Oh wow I am interested to see what you end up doing with the space you have. I dont have kids so I dont have a messy room but…the room I sleep in does tend to get cluttered and messy with clothes and projects. Good luck with this adventure!
