We have a family Christmas party every year, and this is one of our favorite family traditions. It is so magical for the kids to put this together and sprinkle it on the lawn so Santa will come.

Like many families, it may be a yearly tradition in your house that Santa comes. But have you ever thought about his poor reindeer? After all, they do all of the work hauling Santa’s sleigh worldwide. Surely, they could use some refreshments, too, which is why this recipe for magical reindeer food is an activity you will want to try.

What is reindeer food made of?

There are a couple of different types of reindeer food. First is the snack for humans. This is made with Chex mix, chocolate, and all kinds of yummy things!

The next one is the actual food that Santa feeds reindeer in the North Pole. That is a type of livestock feed. This is usually a combo of grains, proteins, and fats.

The third type of Reindeer food is the magical type. This type of food is the kid that makes them fly fast! This is the type that we make. Magical reindeer food is made with oats, cheerios, sugar, and sparkle. The sparkle helps them see the treats on the ground, and the grains help them get the energy to fly fast and strong. That makes this food the most important!

What can you feed the reindeer for Christmas?

Reindeer need a balanced diet. They eat mostly hay and get grain, grass, and other stuff to supplement it. Too much sugar or grains will make them have issues. So it is important only to give them treats occasionally.

That is why once a year they get a super special Christmas treat while they fly Santa’s sleigh. It gives them the strength and magic to keep flying all night!

How do you make reindeer food glow?

Magical reindeer food has a great ingredient that makes it sparkle and glow. It is the part of the reindeer’s food that helps the reindeer see that there is food waiting for them!

There are two ways you can make the reindeer food sparkle and glow. The first is glitter. The glitter shines and glows in the moonlight to attract the reindeer to land and eat the oats and grains while Santa delivers the presents.

The second one is to use sugar and food coloring. If you color the sugar and put it into the mix, it will still shimmer in the moonlight, making the entire treat edible! This is how we like to make it glow. I am always more for totally edible than fake things. And I am not a fan of glitter all over my house! haha!

What is the magic dust for reindeer food?

The magic dust in the reindeer food is a secret concoction. 😉

Really, though. The magic is in the sparkle. The sparkle is magical and brings the reindeer to the food. We use sugar to make the sparkle, but some people like to use glitter. But let’s be real; who loves to use glitter with kids? Not me!

So we use sugar and color it in the magic reindeer food recipe. Then we mix it in to make it more fun and to get the magic going so the reindeer will bring Sants to our house!

Use this Reindeer Food Recipe for a perfect Christmas Eve Activity or a perfect thing to make during a family christmas party! It is a perfect family time activity idea. The kids love to sprinkle it on the lawn Christmas Eve so the reindeer with have a reason to come visit with Santa.

Family Christmas Party Craft Idea: Sweet and Sparkling Reindeer Food

Sweet and Sparkling Reindeer Food is a fun and frugal activity you can enjoy with your children on Christmas Eve to ensure Santa’s reindeer get some tender loving care, too. Here is what you will need to make your own.

Supplies Needed:

1 cup of oats or granola
1 cups of Cheerios
1 tablespoon each of red and green decorating sugar. You are free to use glitter instead of sugar if you don’t intend on eating the mixture (younger children might get curious and wish to taste it), but the choice is up to you.
Small bowl or baggie

Directions:

Mix all of the above ingredients into a bowl. As you mix, why not have a fun and festive conversation about Santa’s eight tiny reindeer? Can your child name them all? Who is their favorite? Once the mixture is well stirred, go ahead and place it either in a bowl or baggie for easy carrying.

When night falls, it is then time to scatter your Sweet and sparkling Reindeer Food out on the lawn. Children will love taking pinches of the mixture and sprinkling it out on the snow for the reindeer to find. The sparkly sugar (or glitter) in the mixture will look lovely sparkling against the white snow and will surely be noticed by reindeer flying high above looking for a snack!
